We had a tremendous response from students, teachers and parents following Rob’s visit to our school. The next day we had multiple students and teachers coming into the library looking for a copy of his second book, and discussing the books they would like to write as a result of his influence. It was obvious that Rob has experience working with students, as his engaging presentation and classroom activities drew in even the most reluctant readers. Students commented that they never knew an author could be so “fun, interesting, funny, and normal!” Rob emphasized the importance of perseverance and hard work, but also made the writing process very approachable. I can’t imagine finding another author who could top or even equal the experience provided by Mr. Buyea.
From Laurel Urda, Simsbury, CT
Your presentation was captivating. I was inspired to write on the spot and excited to go back and teach writing after your presentation... You explained the writing process so well to the fourth graders and we have brought up some of your techniques recently when working on our writing in class.
From Pat Avis, Venerini, Worcester, MA
[Rob's] presentation was chuck full of information, inspiration… and energy. I am sure many students this weekend were pulling out journals and dreaming of being the next Rob Buyea... The students loved [his] delivery style and teachers were delighted with the enthusiasm [he] generated for reading and writing. I especially liked [his] words encouraging students to follow passions and dreams, and to “put your butt in the chair” and work hard… lessons for all of us!
From Pam Yosca, Librarian, Solomon Schechter Day School, Newton, MA
After Rob Buyea visited our fifth and sixth grade students, every teacher in the audience was bursting with praise for both the content of his presentation, and his delivery. It is obvious that Rob, a former teacher, both understands and appreciates a child’s sense of humor, and knows how to talk to children about big ideas without sounding preachy. We love how he took his life experiences, which didn’t originally include plans to become a writer, and developed a framework to discuss how his training as an athlete could be applied to the creative writing process. Rob is genuine, hysterical, greatly entertaining, and inspiring. I highly recommend Rob Buyea for upper elementary and middle school audiences.
From Danielle O'Leary, Swift Middle School, Watertown, CT
"Perhaps the most valuable contribution Rob made was when he did a writing activity with our 6th grade students. Students were given the opportunity to write from characters from Because of Mr. Terupt . Reluctant writers thrived as their hero inspired them to write. Students loved taking Rob’s characters on a new journey. They read their own stories with pride and enthusiasm."
From Gloria Koster, Library Media Specialist, West School
"Kids are drawn to Rob Buyea's authentic voice in his stories about Mr. Terupt, and being able to spend time with this author increases the likelihood that they to will think of themselves as writers. Buyea is a funny, engaging storyteller who drives home the message that writing is a demanding endeavor but one that can prove rewarding to anyone with passion and determination. A top choice for upper middle grade and middle school author visits!"
From Kelly Conway, Library Media Specialist, Canton Intermediate School
"Rob's books and visit were incredibly motivating for our readers - both reluctant and advanced (and everywhere in between) I loved how he made writing an award winning book seem very "ordinary" . By dissecting his personal process, he inspired teachers and students alike to listen, notice and keep a writing journal close by at all times. Kids were laughing and responding while teachers took some notes for future writing lessons. A very accommodating, humble, gifted speaker and writer~sure to be famous for a while."
From Jo-Ann, 5th grade teacher in Guilderland, NY
"Rob was hilarious, genuine, totally engaging, and definitely passionate about his life and writing world. Rob engaged the kids with his story telling and sent such a strong message about passion, determination, setting goals, "failing" and getting back up and setting new goals, using life stories as his backdrop. He was fantastic…the best presenter I have seen for elementary 4th and 5th graders!"
From Shannon, 6th grade teacher in Northfield, MA:
"If you loved the characters in Rob Buyea's novel, Because of Mr. Terupt, then you will love the author himself; he is just as hilarious and charasmatic as Peter, as thoughtful as Anna, and as smart as Luke. After meeting and talking with Rob, you will find a piece of him in all of his characters.
Rob has graciously visited the 6th grade at Northfield Elementary School in Northfield, MA twice- once during the fall of his release, and again the following year. Both times he completely captured the audience. He entertained them with his real-life stories of being an author, teacher, coach, and father. He welcomed students questions and gave honest answers. He had the students rolling on the floor laughing while reading the first chapter of his sequel, Mr. Terupt Falls Again. The students talked about his visit weeks afterward and are still talking about the release of his sequel in the fall.
He is as inspiring as his book!"
From Will, Maret School, Washington, D.C
It is immediately obvious that Rob understands the psyche of young adolescents, and is able to capture their sense of humor and attention in his writing. In person, this same enthusiasm and energy of his characters is evident in his rapport and interactions with students in the classroom. Rob finds a way (through Mr. Terupt) to package the real social issues and emotional sentiments of children into an easily understood and addictive book. My students can't wait for his next book; as Rob shared the first chapter my kids were laughing out loud.
From Miffy, ELL Contact at Lely Elementary in FL:
"What an amazing day & evening! Rob Buyea, author of our students favorite book, because of mr. terupt, is the perfect student motivator. Having Rob here was quite a gift to our school community. His love of education and of young people is evident in all he does. With each word he shares, his genuine love of reading and writing are evident.
Our students, our teachers & our parents were thrilled to meet him, listen to him and to laugh with him. Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are still talking about his visit and will for years to come. Our administration already wants to schedule his visit for next year to share more of mr. terupt falls again. Now that is what I call connection!
I am so grateful to our students who wrote to Rob last year after reading his book, and to Rob’s willingness to have breakfast with that group of students. The day started at 7:30 a.m.with lots of questions and comments and ended at 7:30 p.m. with the same. Young and old, it was a day that Lely Elementary won’t soon forget…all because of mr. terupt!
See you next year Rob!"
From Colleen, PE Teacher, Guilderland Elementary School, Guilderland, NY
"Rob Buyea is an outstanding author and presenter. He quickly captures your attention, whether you are reading his book, “Because of Mr Terupt” or listening to him speak. Wrestling, reading, writing, life … it is about goal setting. Rob’s enthusiasm is contagious. Our fourth graders looked like they were in a “half nelson hold”, just waiting for Rob’s next move, word or story, raptured by his funny stories and real life experiences."
From Susan, Ichabod Crane School in NY:
"The students and the teachers LOVED your visit!! Your enthusiasm was contagious! The kids can't wait for your next book to come out, and you inspired our class to do a "Passion Project," writing, talking, and sharing something they are passionate about."
From Kyle, Virginia Lake School in IL:
"I cannot thank you enough for today! I am so thankful to have shared such a meaningful experience with my students. You were very engaging when talking with them, and anyone can tell you are a teacher by your answers to each question. I could not have asked for a more rewarding skype session with my students.....THANK YOU!"
From Lisa, Maret School, Washington D.C
From Faith, Amity Middle School in CT:
"Amity Middle School-Bethany recently hosted Rob Buyea, author of Because of Mr. Terupt and former teacher at BCS, the elementary school in our district. Rob is currently teaching in Massachusetts and continues to coach wrestling, which he has done for many years.
Rob immediately engaged students with his warmth and enthusiasm. He shared his life stories and lessons and that illustrated his major theme: follow your passion and never give up.
When Rob read from the sequel to Because of Mr. Terupt, he had the audience of pretty sophisticated middle-schoolers laughing out loud and practically rolling in the aisles!
This was an author visit the students will long remember!"
